Exterior sprinkler systems
Sun FireDefense, Frontline Wildfire Defense
Requires water pressure, power, and a functioning utility connection — exactly what wildfires destroy first. Effective in controlled conditions. Unreliable when the grid goes down.
Portable fire blankets
Matador Fire, Ready Defense, Conflagration Shield
Requires a human to deploy while fire is approaching. Covers only what you can physically wrap. Demands the one thing a wildfire evacuation doesn't allow: time and presence.
Ember-resistant vents
Embers Protection Services, Vulcan Vents, Brandguard Vents
Addresses one entry point — the vent — while leaving the eave, soffit, and roofline exposed. Necessary but not sufficient. Reduces ignition risk; does not eliminate it.
Fire-resistant coatings
Firezat, Firetect
Requires periodic reapplication. Degrades with UV exposure and weathering. Provides a thermal delay, not a thermal barrier. No deployment mechanism — passive resistance only up to coating limits.
Retardant concentrates

Applied before fire arrives — requires advance warning and human action. Washes off in rain. Not a structural solution. Designed for seasonal pre-treatment, not integrated protection.

Every product in this market addresses a real part of the wildfire threat. Ember-resistant vents belong in every WUI home. Fire-resistant coatings add a useful thermal delay. Retardants have a role in pre-season preparation. None of them close the gap that killed 16,000 structures in January 2025: the unprotected eave, the unshielded roofline, the moment when fire arrives and no one is home to do anything about it.
